Digital Dating 101: From Online to In Person

THERE SHE IS. You recognize her based on that incredibly gorgeous head of hair from her profile. She’s looking around for you in the club, and you are SO ready to meet! But ACK – it’s been a while since you’ve been on a first time, especially one that started online. What to do, what to do? Let OBC give you 5 tips for the first time you meet your online interest in person!

1. A hug, a handshake, a high five?

There are few things as awkward as a misjudged introduction. You never know what a person’s personal space boundaries are, and messing up that very first touch could be a total dealbreaker. So, we suggest that whether you’re texting, talking on the phone, or still online messaging before the meet-up, to make a little joke about it. By saying, “I’m a hugger, is that gonna weird you out?” or “so should I fist bump you or kiss you hello?” It’s a silly, casual way to pre-empt the discomfort of meeting a (semi)blind date for the first time.

2. The buffer

If you happen to have a friend with you, it’s a good ice-breaker to introduce your date to them, especially if you both have brought along a pal. You can chat and flirt with the help of people you know well… just make sure they are in on the game – the last thing you want is your buffer to start flirting with your would-be date. Don’t got a tagalong? No problem, but bring instead a fun story or item to get the conversation ball rolling – maybe a “found” ticket in your pocket to a concert or sports event, or a story about getting a ticket on the way to the date. It might be a little bit of a fib, but no one minds if it helps the conversations start to flow.

3. Move, watch, laugh, dance

We’ll just hope that your first date is somewhere that isn’t an empty room in a convention center, because in almost any date locale, there is SOMETHING to help you and your date get to know each other. Maybe it’s a funny video on the TV at the bar you’re at, or an argument between two people in the park. Maybe you’re in the club and getting your groove on is the perfect way to get yo flirt on. Whatever it is, don’t just sit and stare. Use that brain of yours that is a million years in the making and find a way to connect.

4. Move to somewhere a little more intimate

If you’re both into each other, and the conversation is flowing, maybe excuse yourself from your group and see if your date would want a cup of coffee or glass of wine somewhere a little less crowded. Stay public (because SAFETY), but let the crowd slip away and see if the flirtation remains! Of course, if you realize after a few minutes of conversation that this is NOT the person you want to spend your evening with, then this is the perfect time to have a friend “text” with an emergency… you need to pick them up, or they’re too drunk to get home. Always be polite and thank the person for meeting up, but don’t promise a call or a message if you have no intention of seeing them again.

5. DECISION TIME

Welp, it’s been an awesome first meeting, and now it’s the moment of truth – do you take this bit of fun to one your pads, or call it a night and plan to meet again soon? It’s 2017, and sleeping together on the first date ISN’T a big deal. On the other hand, it’s totally normal and almost expected that the first time you meet you’ll end up sleeping alone. So however the night ends, whether it’s with a hug and a “thanks” or a passionate hook up sesh, know that you’ve made it to the other side, and everything about online dating is easy-peasy-coasting-downhill from here. Congrats, you are an official online dater!
