A new study by a group of researchers suggests that casual sex might not be ruining our women as previous scientists tried to claim, and it might in fact be the dating that is causing women to be insecure, self-conscious, and submissive.

Sociologist Sinnika Elliot and her co-researchers presented college students two scenarios and then asked them to judge the motivation behind each. The scenarios:

In the first part of each scenario, a man and a woman meet at a party for the first time and hook up. In the second part of each scenario, the same man and woman go on a date a week after hooking up – and the date ends in a kiss (no sex). In one scenario, the woman asks the man out on the date. In the other scenario, the man asks the woman out.

Excitingly, nearly all the students believed that the motivation behind the hook up was mutual – that both the man and the woman in the scenario were looking to hook up. Very few painted the woman in a negative light for being open to casual sex, and instead believed that they were both free to act on their own desires without fear of damaging their reputations.

However, when it comes to the post-hookup date, where no sex was had, the gender inequality is far more obvious:

Approximately half of the students said the woman ended the date that the man initiated with a kiss to fix the man’s impression of her and show that she is “respectable,” and thus good dating material. And when asked about the scenario in which the woman asks the man out, about half of the students said he only went on the date out of a sense of obligation—a pity date—and that he didn’t have sex because he had no real interest in her and did not want to lead her on.

Of course, we can’t make any brash conclusions about a hypothetical scenario, but it’s interesting to see what the students perceived happening, because they had likely been in the situation before. They had clearly seen women go on a “second” date with a man where she felt she had to redeem herself for “looking slutty” or had seen a guy go on a “pity date” with a girl he had no intention of seeing again.

Sure, this may not mean that casual sex is the 100% guaranteed way to end gender inequality, but it does show that perhaps men and women can mutually benefit from a more modern relationship that is not already pigeon-holed into gender roles (man picks up woman, woman dresses to impress, man pays, woman gives road head [just kidding]). It might finally be time for people to widen their view of what is a “socially acceptable” and “healthy” relationship… and that’s news we’re happy to learn.

When I first read the headline for this Time Magazine article, I believed it was saying that those who get married before the age of 18 are probably have some preexisting mental issues, and I was taken aback. I knew that young married couples were probably misinformed and likely very naive, but psychologically unstable? YEESH.

Turns out the headline actually meant the reverse of that. Time Magazine’s report on a study Dr. Yann Le Strat implies that girls who marry before the age of 18 have a “41% increased risk of… depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and alcohol and drug addiction.”

Seems to make quite the case for casual dating until your later years, I’d say. Although Dr. Le Strat did not make any assumptions why this psychological issues might arise, it’s safe to say that it may be due to the stress marriage puts on a couple, the high levels of responsibility to maintain a marriage (especially before you are even legally allowed to drink alcohol or rent a car!), and the very real possibility that infidelity will occur when you marry the first person you sleep with.

Of course, this study was the first of its kind and it will surely take much more research to find out if there is just a correlation or if there is actual causation, but for no we’d suggest not to risk it. Enjoy the single life into your twenties, and only settle down when you are mentally prepared for fidelity.

We spend a lot of time together, readers, laughing at dumb criminals and learning about sex news and watching crazy videos. However, sometimes we have to remember that this is Booty Call University, and every once in a while (like once every two weeks depending on how hungover you might be) you actually have to show up to class. And since summer is just about in full swing, we figured we’d drop some knowledge on how to snag some summer lovin that will make 2011 your best year yet!

1. Make yourSELF the best you can be

Before you start going around judging potential hook ups in the summer sun, make sure that you yourself are lookin’ fly. When was the last time you got a haircut? Do you need to, ahem, change your diet and workout plan? Are you still wearing last years’ cheap-ass flip flops from when you lost your nice ones in Havasu? And on that note, HOW ARE YOUR FEET LOOKING? We by no means believe in superficiality, but if you are walking around looking like a mess, how are you going to have the confidence (and the gall) to pick the best booty out there? Take some time to look in the mirror and work on the things you’ve been hiding under sweatshirts and beanies for the past few months. Oh, and stock up on contraception. No need to be spreading diseases or makin’ babies this summer.

2. Hang out at the right places

The summer is all about finding cool, casual people who are down to have fun and hook up without a big commitment or drama. Because of this, I would advise to steer clear of the clubs. The ladies and gents who frequent epilepsy-inducing nightclubs in the middle of the hottest season of the year are PROBABLY not the type you want to bring home. They’re high-maintenance and expensive, and probably will take more work than they’re worth. Instead, hit up smaller venues like hip gastropubs and beachside bars that are more “sandals and daisy dukes” than “sky-high heels and glittery dress.” That’s where you’ll find the type of folk who are down (in more ways than one).

3. Be forward, but not creepy

Honesty is always the best policy, but if you are dancing with a hottie and chatting over drinks, there is no need to yell “HEY I’M REALLY JUST LOOKING FOR SEX RIGHT NOW OKAY NOT A RELATIONSHIP SORRY LET’S GO BACK TO YOUR PLACE?!” over the music (this is specifically addressed to guys. Ladies – dudes might really be into this. I’m not sure). Instead, enjoy each others company, get flirtatious, and maybe try and go home alone with just their number the first night. After a couple days, either call or send a text that explains you aren’t looking for anything serious but had a lot of fun and would love to hang out again, or something of that nature. That way you put your intentions on the table without sounding like a pervy creep with no tact.

4. Keep your options open

Instead of claiming the first person you meet as your summer hook up, make a rule that you’ll only call once a week or so. If you immediately latch onto the first person you hook up with, you’ll end up ditching out on your friends and potentially missing out on a new, even better hook up that’s waiting in the wings. Keep getting yourself out there and you’ll get a view of the millions of fish in the sea.

5. Most importantly: have fun

All these rules are relative, of course, to your desires and experience. Perhaps you are just looking for one fling – that’s okay… and maybe nightclubs are just your thing and you like the scene better. Also cool. However, above all, you must remember that summer is about enjoying the season and all it has to offer and HAVE FUN. The second things start heading south. Pull back, evaluate, and see what you need to do to be your happiest! The whole point of casual dating is to enjoy being young and carefree, instead of feeling suffocated and limited. So have fun, get laid, and have a BOOTY-FUL summer!

So, you fixed up your headline, adjusted your photos, gave your profile a makeover and mastered the first message. Now of course, it’s time to actually meet up! 1. Don’t over-plan it

The last thing you’ll want to do is treat the first date like some sort of over-zealous attempt at making yourself look good. If you try and plan a romantic dinner in the park followed by a scavenger hunt followed by drinks on a rooftop, most likely two of those things will bomb. Sprinklers will go off in the park, your scavenger hunt will be a failure, or the rooftop bar will be closed. Or all three. Plan one thing, like the drinks at a place with a nice view, and then call it a night, orrr take the fun back to your place. If you know what I mean. ;)

2. Don’t try and go at it alone

If you are prone to nervousness on dates, there is no problem in having your date meet up with you with a group of their friends while you’re with your friends. Not only will it feel less awkward to have your friends around, but you’ll be able fill gaps in conversations by introducing your date to your friends. Two tips: DO NOT be so nervous that you ignore your date all night, and do NOT forget to tell your friends that if they say anything awkward about you, you’ll sell their organs on the black market.

3. Go somewhere with entertainment

Check out your local bars and restaurants that have live music or a DJ spinning. That way, when those tense silences come up (they will, no matter how compatible you are), you can always say, “boy this band is great!” or “my god this DJ sounds like a drunk 4 year old.”

4. Have a pre-date drink

Sitting around your apartment, tapping your foot and sweating through your top isn’t going to make the start of the date any easier. Call up a friend and ask them to meet you for a drink a few minutes before you are to meet your date. Note that I said “a” drink and not seven drinks. showing up to your date drunk is a big slice of no-no cake. But one glass of wine to loosen up your muscles and nerves is never a bad idea.

5. Don’t over-think it

This is the most important advice in this entire post. Whether you are meeting someone from OBC that you don’t really plan on starting a relationship with, or someone with whom you could see a long-term thing happening with (yuck), making the experience more tense than necessary is POINTLESS. Rewind to a year or so back, and Brody Jenner (talent: being born to someone talented) and Jayde Nicole (talent: tits) were dating,  making out in Hawaii, and looking generally hot all while dressed like normal human beings. He was drool-worthy hot in that “why do I know who you are again?” type of way.

Fast forward to this week. He’s now dating Avril Lavigne (talent: none) and now has an anarchy A buzzed into his hair? And like, only wears black and gray? Because why? And what? And oh my God that’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen? But it brings me to this point: long term relationships change you. No matter how hard you may try to “be yourself” and “stay true to the real you” and whatever, being in an LTR (long term relationship) with another person somehow changes your genetic makeup (science!) and turns you into like, an exact replica of them. Just another reason to stick to casual dating: keep your fabulous uniqueness, have fun, and date, at least until you’re okay being in one of those family portraits where you and your wife and your dog all have the same haircut.

There are few things on the internet that give us as much pre-teen giddiness as a flirty Facebook chat. If you’re like me, you’re generally repulsed everytime you hear the little *clink* of a Facebook chat message, because 99.9% of the time it’s the LAST person you want to talk to (i.e. the most boring person on your friends list). However, on the off chance that an old fling or a new guy/girl you met recently sends you a message, that little *clink* quickly shifts from miserable to heart-pounding.

That being said, people shouldn’t meet on Facebook. Furthermore, people shouldn’t add each other on Facebook if they’re beginning to date. Why? Because why should a person you’re getting to know get to know you before you get to know them?

Sorry, that was confusing. But let’s just say you met some chick at a bar, and she (using her FBI-rivaling powers of Facebook searching) tracked you down and friended you. Not only will she spend the next 5 to 10 days browsing through every photo album and status update you’ve ever created, but she’ll have read your About Me about 400 times and will probably know half your friends’ names. So if you happen to meet up with her again, the exchange will go something like

You: “Yeah, I’m a film maj-”

Her: “FILM MAJOR I know yeah I know I saw that”

You: “…Uh, yeah, and my favorite director is-”

Her: “WES ANDERSON?? Yeah I know me too.”

You: “…Okay… ha, uh… anyway, me and my friend Ky-”

Her: “KYLE JENSEN AND YOU ARE ENTERING THE 48 HOUR FILM FESTIVAL WITH THE THEME HEARTBREAK ON JULY 16th?”

I don’t know about you, but when I think of hot, sexy playboy who goes through women like toilet paper, my first mental image is Larry King. Those liver spots, the ribcage-high pants, the subtle onset of dementia, it’s all so sexy I coul- BLECH.

Okay, the joke’s gone too far. But it’s true, Larry King is apparently on his 8th, as in 1234567 8th divorce! This time it’s from Shawn King, a woman 26 years younger than him, and about 260 times hotter. They’re citing “irreconcilable differences,” although we blame Mr. King’s inability to eat solid foods.

It’s good to know that it’s acceptable to have 8 divorces, but being a single guy or girl looking to date casually instead of getting married is still looked down upon. Sure makes sense, huh?

A study carried out by ICM claims that women who came of age between the years 2000 and 2009 have an average of 5.65 sexual partners by the time they hit 24 years old, unlike our parents’ generation, when the average was only 3.72 partners.  And the generation before them? Only 1.67 partners. Sounds pretty boring if you ask me!

This seems to show that as a country, our attitudes about sex are slowly getting more and more relaxed, and people are finally realizing that a lifestyle of casual dating (and safe, casual sex) isn’t the most detestable choice, and committing to the first person you sleep with isn’t the only option. Casual dating for the win!

Obviously your first choice should be OBC, it’s got a ton of hot singles all looking for fun without the long term commitment. However, if you’ve got to pull yourself away from the computer for a few hours, it doesn’t mean you can’t be looking for singles at other places. Here are a few places you might not think of to meet a great booty call.

1) Wine Tasting Bars

Instead of going to the same dirty dive bar, try out a place that specializes in wine tasting. Not only will you meet different types of people, but you’ll be less inclined to getting flat out wasted, thus lessening your chance of embarrassing hookups and 5-star hangovers.

5) A Blood Drive

Put your charitable hat on and head over to a blood donation center. Suggest you both go re-energize at a restaurant after you give blood. At least you know they’re disease free!
